UKiset for Nigerian Students: What It Is and How to Prepare

UKiset for Nigerian students

Your child has picked a British boarding school. Then the school says, “Please sit the UKiset.”

Now, you are searching for what that means.

UKiset is a UK admissions test. It checks reasoning and English skills. Some boarding schools ask international applicants to take it.

The good news is that UKiset tests the skills your child can build. And for most families, the whole thing happens from home, online.

Read this before you book. A few small details are worth getting right the first time.

What Is UKiset?

UKiset is an assessment for entry into British curriculum schools. It was founded in 2013 by Gabbitas and developed with Cambridge University Press & Assessment. You can read the official overview on the UKiset website.

The test gives schools a profile of your child. It shows reasoning ability and English level. Results are compared with British students of the same age.

That helps a school judge an overseas applicant fairly. Your child does not have to be in the British system already.

UKiset at a glance

An admissions test for overseas applicants to British schools.

Three parts: Reasoning, English, and a handwritten essay.
How it is taken:  Online, with a live invigilator, for most candidates.
Results:  A Parent Report about 3 working days after all three parts.
Valid for:  One year. A re-sit is possible every 3 months.
Ages:  Roughly 9.5 to 18. Confirm on the UKiset site.

Which UK Schools Ask for UKiset?

Not every school asks for it.

Some use UKiset for all overseas applicants. Some accept other tests. Some use their own entrance exams. Many decide case by case.

UKiset says it serves independent schools in its network and British curriculum international schools. Some tutoring companies put the number at over 250 schools, in its UKiset guide. That figure is not official.

So, the first step is simple. Ask your school’s admissions office two questions:

  • – Do you require UKiset for international applicants?
  • – Do you accept another test instead?

Schools also read the results in their own way. UKiset does not work like a pass-or-fail exam.

UKiset for Nigerian Students: What the Test Covers

There are three parts. Your child sits on all three.

Part What it checks Format About how long
1. Reasoning Verbal, non-verbal and maths reasoning Online. Adapts to answers 30 to 45 minutes
2. English Reading and listening Online 60 to 90 minutes
3. Essay Writing Handwritten, pen and paper About 30 minutes

Timings come from tutoring guides, not UKiset. Confirm them in your invigilation guide. Sources: Leading Tuition and Atom Learning.

The reasoning part adapts. When your child answers well, the questions get harder. When they struggle, they get easier.

Scores show how your child compares with UK students of the same age. English is reported on a scale from A1 to C2. One guide says schools often look for at least B2.

Phones, calculators and dictionaries are not allowed in the test.

How to Register for UKiset From Nigeria

Registration happens on the UKiset website. These are the steps.

I.Register with accurate details. They are shared with the schools you select.

II. Upload a photo and a copy of a current passport. If your child does not have a passport yet, start there.

III. Choose a preferred test date. UKiset confirms availability, then emails a confirmation and an invigilation guide.

IV. Add a short self-introduction video. It is strongly encouraged.

One to two minutes is enough. Cover name, age, interests, favourite subjects, and why your child wants to study in the UK.

V. Pay online. Registered candidates get a payment link.

Online tests run with a live invigilator, a UKiset team member who supervises and can guide your child. Device, internet and webcam needs are in the invigilation guide.

What to have ready on test day

1. Your child’s passport

2. A pen, lined paper and scrap paper

3. A printed copy of the essay template

4. Headphones, if you want them (optional)

UKiset for Nigerian Students: Fees, Dates and Results

I. Fees

UKiset shows the test fee when you register, so check it there. According to Atom Learning’s guide, the test costs roughly £295 to £325 per sitting, depending on weekday or weekend.

Two things are on UKiset’s own page. Weekend invigilation adds 10%. The School Report goes free to up to five schools. Each extra school costs £50.

Test fees are separate from school fees. For those, read our guide to UK boarding school fees for Nigerian families.

II. Dates

You choose a preferred date. UKiset confirms what is available. Online invigilation runs seven days a week.

III. Results

The Parent Report arrives by email about 3 working days after all three parts. The School Report goes straight to the schools you picked. They then contact your child or the agent.

Results are valid for one year. Your child can re-sit every 3 months.

Plan the date around your school’s application deadline. Leave room for a re-sit.

How to Prepare for UKiset

UKiset does not publish sample papers. So the best preparation is to build the skills behind the test.

Gabbitas advises starting with the basics: vocabulary, grammar and times tables up to 12. It also suggests practising spatial puzzles for the non-verbal part.

Short, regular sessions beat long ones. Here is a simple 4-week plan. It is our suggestion, so adjust it to your child’s level.

Week

Focus

Week 1 English every day. Read, listen and speak. Learn new words. Revise grammar and times tables to 12.
Week 2 Reasoning. Pattern puzzles, number sequences and maths word problems. No calculator.
Week 3 Essay. Plan for 5 minutes, write for 20, check for 5. Practise by hand.
Week 4 Timed practice. Set up the desk, internet and paper exactly as on test day.

Common UKiset Mistakes to Avoid

◆ Booking late. Schools have deadlines. Book early enough to allow a re-sit.

◆ Wrong registration details. They go to your schools. Match them to the passport.

◆ Skipping the intro video. UKiset strongly encourages it. It shows who your child is.

◆ Hunting for past papers. They are not published. Practise the skills instead.

◆ Cramming the night before. Little and often works better.
