UK boarding school fees dominate the list of questions most Nigerian parents ask us. And the answers online rarely agree.
Some platforms say £15,000 a year. Others say £60,000. They can’t both be right.
The average UK boarding school charges roughly £15,000 a term before VAT. With 20% VAT added, that is around £18,000 a term. The four schools we researched sit between roughly £18,500 and £22,500 a term, VAT included.
That is before visa costs, guardianship and extras. We have broken down every cost (as at October, 2026)

Average per term: roughly £15,000 before VAT. Around £18,000 with VAT. Average per year: roughly £45,000 before VAT. Around £54,000 with VAT. This is our own calculation (three terms). Four UK schools case study: roughly £18,500 to £22,500 a term with VAT. About £55,500 to £67,500 a year. VAT: 20%. It applies to boarding fees, including for pupils from overseas. On top: visa, health surcharge, guardianship, deposits, flights, uniform and spending money. |
Note: Fees change every year. Treat these ranges as a guide, not a quote.
How much do UK boarding school fees cost, per term and per year?
The most reliable national figure comes from the Independent Schools Council (ISC). Its 2026 census puts the average boarding fee at roughly £15,000 a term. That is before VAT.
It rose by about 4% on the year before.
Most schools bill in three terms. So the yearly average is roughly £45,000 before VAT. With VAT, it is around £54,000.
The ISC reports the termly figure. The yearly figure is our own calculation.
Remember, this is an average. Some schools charge less. Some charge noticeably more, as you will see next.

UK boarding school fees at four named schools
Averages only go so far. So we opened the fee pages of four well-known boarding schools. Here are their 2026/27 boarding fees, rounded to ranges.
All figures include VAT.
| School | Per term | Per year (our estimate) | Read the full fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stonyhurst College | £18,500 to £19,500 | £55,500 to £58,500 | Stonyhurst fee page |
| Oundle School | £20,000 to £21,000 | £60,000 to £63,000 | Oundle fee schedule |
| Wycombe Abbey | £21,000 to £22,000 | £63,000 to £66,000 | Wycombe Abbey fees |
| Concord College | £21,500 to £22,500 | £64,500 to £67,500 | Concord boarding fees |
A few notes on how to read this:
- – Stonyhurst: we used its rest-of-the-world boarding rate for Years 9 to 11.
- – Oundle: we used its overseas boarding rate, which is separate from the rate for pupils living in the UK.
- – Per year: schools may bill differently. We multiplied the termly range by three.

Registration and deposits
Most schools charge a registration fee when you apply. On the pages above, this runs from roughly £150 to £500.
After an offer, expect a deposit of a few thousand pounds. For overseas pupils, one school sets the total deposit at about one term’s fees.
Rules on what the deposit is credited to differ by school. Read each school’s terms.
|
Please read before you plan The fee ranges in this guide are rounded from each school’s own published fee page, checked in October 2026. Schools set their own fees and change them often. This is a guide, not a quote. The schools named are examples only. Mentioning a school is not an endorsement, and it does not mean the school has approved this article. Always confirm current fees on the school’s own page, or with its admissions office, before you plan or pay. |

Does VAT apply to UK boarding school fees for Nigerian pupils?
Yes. Since 1 January 2025, 20% VAT applies to private school fees in the UK. That includes boarding fees.
It applies whether your child is from the UK or from overseas.
A tax firm, Blick Rothenberg, explains this in its briefing note on VAT and private education.
You can also see it on the schools’ own pages. Oundle lists its overseas fee with VAT added on top. Wycombe Abbey and Concord College say their fees include VAT.
One thing to check every time
When you compare fees, ask one question: does this figure include VAT?
The difference is about 20%. Comparing one school’s fee with VAT against others without it can mislead you by thousands of pounds a year.
Note: Tax rules can change. Confirm the current position with the school’s finance office.
Costs on top of the fees: visa, health surcharge and guardianship
School fees are only part of the bill. Nigerian families usually budget for these too.
A. Student visa and health surcharge
- – Child Student visa: £558 when applying from outside the UK. See GOV.UK visa fees.
- – Immigration Health Surcharge: £776 for each year of the visa. See GOV.UK health surcharge.
For a one-year visa, that comes to about £1,334. A longer visa costs more, because the surcharge is charged per year.
Note: Government fees change. Check the links above for the current amounts.
B. Guardianship
Most schools expect pupils whose parents live overseas to have a UK-based guardian. Ask your school what it requires.
Prices vary by package. One UK provider lists roughly £2,000 to £6,500 a year, plus a one-off registration fee. See its guardianship booklet.
Costs also rise if your child needs a host family during exeats and school holidays.
C. Everything else
Flights, uniforms, trips, music lessons and spending money are usually extra. So are exam fees and textbooks at some schools.
Every school has a different list. Ask for it before you accept a place.

What a first year can really cost
Let’s put it together. This is an example only. Your total will depend on the school, your child’s year group and your choices.
| Cost | Rough range for year one |
|---|---|
| School fees (three terms, with VAT) | £55,500 to £67,500 |
| Child Student visa and health surcharge (one year) | About £1,334 |
| Guardianship, if needed | £2,000 to £6,500 |
| Total before flights, uniform and spending money | About £58,800 to £75,300 |
Registration and deposits are extra at the start. Check whether the school credits the deposit to your final bill.
Turning it into Naira
The formula is simple:
Fee in pounds × the exchange rate on the day you pay = amount in naira.
Example: at ₦1,814 to £1, a £60,000 bill comes to about ₦108,840,000.
That rate was the mid-market rate on Wise on 16 October 2026. It changes daily, and your bank’s rate will differ, so check before you budget.

How Nigerian families pay UK boarding school fees
Schools usually bill each term, or twice a year. Some ask for a deposit first. Concord College, for example, says it invoices twice a year.
Here is a simple way to prepare:
- – Ask the school’s finance office for payment instructions and deadlines.
- – Speak to your bank early. Ask about the exchange rate, charges, transfer time and the documents they need.
- – Keep your invoices and payment receipts. You will need them for your visa records.
- – Leave a few days before each deadline.
Can scholarships and bursaries reduce UK boarding school fees?
Sometimes, yes.
Some schools offer scholarships for academic, sport, music or art talent. Some offer bursaries based on family finances.
But rules, amounts and who can apply differ by school. Places are limited. And support for overseas pupils is not guaranteed.
So check each school’s own page, and apply early.
